Spoken word poem
Intro:
Ruth – Togo
Shadrack – Congo
Natasha – Uganda
Alan – Kenya
Spoken:
Ruth - When new youth come to Canada, they face abundant challenges, such as friends, languages, and schooling.
Shadrack - When I came to Canada I faced challenges with my accent.
Natasha – I faced challenges with the way I spoke. I couldn’t speak the language here. No one could understand my thoughts and opinions. This made me loose self-confidence.
Alan - The weather change was so dramatic. The sense of belonging was nonexistent. Others viewed us as outsiders. Our food looks, smells, and is eaten differently. Our jokes are hilarious, but no one gets it here! Am I not funny?
Shadrack – No bro, it’s your accent.
Natasha – Let’s talk about hair for a minute. Every time I go to school with my nice afro, all shiny and combed, people want to touch it. First time, ok. A second or third… not a chance. This is my identity, you can’t just come over and change it.
Ruth – You see, people don’t understand what we’ve gone through. Not everyone has gone through such changes as intense or profound as we have. When you’re in a group with people who understand your experiences, you just become so comfortable that you start imagining how you can better the province.
Shadrack – That’s when Imagine NB comes to the picture. Imagine NB is a program that empowers youth to be better leaders.
Natasha - We are given the experience to meet important people in our community and share a little of what we have learned so far.
Shadrack - Being in Imagine NB creates different opportunities. We get a lot of inspiration and we also learn about different cultures from the other delegates, who are potential, lifelong friends.
Natasha - As a youth delegate in Imagine NB. I would say, that I have personally learned how to be an even better leader than I was yesterday. I have also learned new ideas and have gained back some of my forgotten confidence.
Alan – Here we learn. Decision Station is in the middle of your mind. Never mind… but focus IN your mind. You are the only one who knows what your goal in life is. Imagine NB is not just about having fun. It is about learning new things and making ourselves better people, while we grow together.
Ruth – Being in Imagine NB is like being in a family. We feel like we belong. We have fun, but are serious when needed. We participate, while expressing our thoughts and ideas. A wise person once said, “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things”. This is what we do in Imagine NB.
Shadrack – Together, we would like to thank the Department Of Education here in New Brunswick. Without their support, we would not be able to add our voice and influence to Canadian society.
